Kakao Games has announced a three-week delay for the early access release of Path of Exile 2 (hereinafter referred to as POE 2), which was originally scheduled to launch on November 16. The delay is due to setbacks in server infrastructure work.
At gamescom 2024 in Germany this past August, a new trailer for POE 2 was revealed, and the original early access release date was set. However, on October 29, an official YouTube video broke the news that early access would be postponed.
Jonathan Rogers, Game Director at Path of Exile 2 developer Grinding Gear Games, explained that the new early access release date will be December 6 (December 7 in Korea). He acknowledged that the delay might inconvenience players who had made plans around the original release date and expressed regret, saying, "I’m really sorry for the delay, but it couldn’t be helped."

The delay isn’t due to issues with the game itself but rather because server infrastructure work has been taking significantly longer than anticipated. To enable microtransactions to work seamlessly across both POE 1 and POE 2, Grinding Gear Games needs to unify account systems between the two games and also across console platforms.
This integration requires extensive changes to existing systems, the creation of numerous new structures, and ensuring compatibility with legacy data.
During the migration of legacy databases, Rogers encountered numerous anomalies, including duplicate accounts, multiple accounts sharing the same email address, and several accounts linked to identical Steam IDs.
To avoid errors and prevent account issues, the development team is rewriting backend code and performing extensive load testing. Even with intense efforts, they couldn’t be certain everything would be ready by the original release date.
Rogers took full responsibility for the delay, apologizing for not allocating sufficient time. In four weeks, Grinding Gear Games plans to host a live broadcast revealing POE 2’s early access content, which Rogers promised will include the biggest league announcement in POE history. Following the broadcast, the official website will display the updated early access release date of December 7.
POE 2 is the direct sequel to POE, allowing players to choose from 12 classes, each with three specializations, offering a total of 36 possible class options.
The sequel also expands on the core systems from the first game, with an extensive passive skill tree of roughly 1,500 nodes, 240 skill gems, and 200 support gems, allowing for in-depth character customization. The game will feature six campaigns and over 100 unique maps, with more than 600 monster types and 100 distinct bosses. Players can look forward to challenging boss battles and improved versions of popular league mechanics from the first game.
