The service of the games that Action Square has developed and LINKED (formerly YJM GAMES) released this year is set to end, one after the other.
First, the service for the action RPG “Blade X” that was launched in January, is scheduled to end on the 13th. “Blade X” was released as a sequel to the “Blade” series, which was the first action RPG to surpass five million downloads, boasting of flashy action, easy controls, a console-like story presentation, and high-quality graphics.
However, LINKED announced the service termination in August, stating, “It has been concluded that it is difficult to sustain the service of the game in its current state.” The service is therefore ending just eight months after its release.
That's not all. The service termination of “Kingdom: The Blood” has also been announced. This game, a PC/mobile action RPG based on the original drama “Kingdom” from the popular OTT platform Netflix, had gathered 500,000 pre-registrants.
Launched last March, the game was leveraged on Korea's charm and was based on the oriinal drama's storyline; however, it failed to attract fans and received a “Mostly Negative” rating on the Steam platform.
LINKED announced on the 9th that the service was difficult to sustain, and would be terminated with its ending set for December, thus closing just nine months after its launch.
This move seems to be an attempt at overcoming the company's challenging situation. Action Square's first-half financial results showed revenue of 1.8 billion won, an operating loss of 7.8 billion won, and a net loss of 8 billion won. Moreover, in July, the publishing contract for “Project AE” with Gala Games was terminated at the request of Gala Games.
Given this situation, Action Square appears to be actively collaborating with HYBE IM instead of its parent company, LINKED, for the launch of new developments.
In February, Action Square signed a global publishing contract with HYBE IM for the new third-person extraction PvEvP dungeon crawler “Dungeon Stalkers” and received a strategic investment from HYBE IM. They participated in gamescom 2024 held in Germany last August, and also conducted a global beta test.
In August, a global publishing contract was also signed for the idle RPG “Idle Blades of Three Kingdoms” based on the “Blades of Three Kingdoms” IP, securing Action Square’s lineup in succession with HYBE IM.
Listed on KOSDAQ, Action Square might be designated a management concern in the latter half of the year if it records losses. In particular, if a loss exceeding 50% of the company’s equity occurs twice within three years, it becomes a management concern. Action Square has already recorded a loss exceeding 50% last year. Therefore, the success of “Dungeon Stalkers,” which is scheduled for release within the year, appears to be of crucial importance.
