After a relatively quiet first half of the year, Kakao Games is set to roll out several new titles in the latter half of 2024.
Since taking the helm at the beginning of the year, new CEO Han Sang-woo has steered Kakao Games away from releasing major new titles in the first half of 2024. While the company did launch the mobile MMORPG “ROM: Remember of Majesty” in February and the mobile casual RPG “Gran Saga Idle: Knights x Knights” in June, these were joint projects with other developers rather than being solely Kakao Games' creations.
With a focus on enhancing the live services of its existing games and expanding into overseas markets, Kakao Games shifted its strategy away from releasing major new titles in the first half of 2024. For its flagship MMORPG "Odin: Valhalla Rising," the company introduced new content such as guild wars and third-job advancements, while also expanding the matchmaking system from a server-based structure to a world-based one.
Expanding its horizons, the cross-platform MMORPG "Ares: Rise of Guardians" introduced new territories and challenging top-tier raid content. Additionally, subculture games like "Eversoul" and "Uma Musume Pretty Derby" garnered remarkable success through their unwavering commitment to regular updates.
In May, the company introduced the mobile collectible RPG "Eversoul" to Japan, the epicenter of subculture. This was followed by the June 27 release of the MMORPG "ArcheAge WAR" in nine countries, encompassing Japan, Taiwan, and key regions in Southeast Asia.
However, the second half of the year will see the sequential release of several games across various genres that Kakao Games has been diligently preparing.
The first game set to debut is the real-time strategy (RTS) game "Stormgate," developed by Frost Giant Studios, a new developer formed by members who previously worked on successful RTS titles like "StarCraft II" and "Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos."
Designed for easy accessibility and engaging gameplay, “Stormgate” introduces three distinct factions: the human Vanguard, the alien Infernal Host, and the futuristic Celestial Armada. Players can choose their preferred faction and immerse themselves in various game modes, including intense battles and cooperative missions. The game is set for pre-play access on July 31, followed by its official launch on August 14.
Next in the lineup is "Goddess Order," crafted by PixelTribe, the studio behind the acclaimed "Crusaders Quest." This epic title debuted at G-Star 2022, captivating attendees with its immersive gameplay and stunning visuals.
The captivating action RPG "Goddess Order" is a 2D side-scrolling adventure set against a backdrop of medieval fantasy. Featuring stunning pixel art, an enthralling narrative, and intricate combat reminiscent of fighting games, the game is set for a global release in the second half of the year, with a teaser site already available for international players.
Originally known as "Project V," the dark fantasy hack-and-slash roguelike casual RPG "Valhalla Survival" is also slated for a global release in the second half of the year for PC and mobile platforms. Developed by Lionheart Studio, the creators of "Odin: Valhalla Rising," "Valhalla Survival" shares the same world as its predecessor.
"Valhalla Survival" offers the exhilarating experience of defeating massive hordes of monsters, along with the excitement of collecting and combining various items and skills to create your unique builds. Designed for easy one-handed control and fast-paced gameplay, it aims to captivate players worldwide. The game also features stunning graphics powered by Unreal Engine 5.
Furthermore, Kakao Games plans to launch the world’s first digital collection mobile game featuring various idol artists from SM Entertainment, tentatively titled "SM Game Station," in the global market in the second half of the year. Lionheart Studio’s subculture simulation game "Project C" will also be released in Korea and Japan during this period.
Ocean Drive Studio's strategy RPG "Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch," originally slated for release in the second quarter, has been delayed to the second half of the year. Meanwhile, plans are underway to move forward with the full launch of the twin-stick shooter PC game "Blackout Protocol," currently in early access on Steam. Additionally, there are efforts to release a blockchain-based sports simulation game leveraging a global IP.
Kakao Games will continue expanding its existing games into international markets. "Odin: Valhalla Rising" is set to launch in significant North American and European markets. At the same time, the PC hack-and-slash action RPG "Path of Exile" will receive an upgrade to its sequel, "Path of Exile 2," with an early access release slated for the second half.
With this aggressive strategy, Kakao Games plans to significantly improve its performance, which has been somewhat stagnant, by unveiling a barrage of new titles across various genres and platforms in the latter half of the year.
